Attendees of PCC Raleigh Plant Tour in front of entrance mural

On Thursday, February 13, 2020 GWAPCC Industry Co-Chair, Nick Svab, PCC members and business leaders met at the Raleigh P & DC for an educational and informative tour of the entire plant. The participants included military postal personnel and supervisors, mailers, printers and marketers.

They were met by an enthusiastic Industrial Engineer, Drew Fraser, who led them through all processes of the plant from start to finish; from the docks where mail arrives, to the docks where mail leaves. Drew explained the BMEU processes, which interested those mailers who drop their mail at smaller BMEU acceptance sites. He explained the differences between three-digit and five-digit machine processing, and how mail may have to be run through a machine more than once before it is prepared for outgoing mail.

The participants were intrigued by the various machines, like the DIOSS 101, which can spray barcodes on mail, the Automated Parcel Package system, and the new technologies that Drew, himself, has instituted at the plant to help move the mail and packages through the plant more efficiently.

All participants were intrigued with the enormous network of machines, processes and technology used to move the mail. For most, it was their first time to a mail processing plant, and they had many interesting questions and comments.

The Greater Willington Area PCC looks forward to more USPS plant tours in the future.
